Jewels of Italy

Gioielli d'ItaliaThe Project

The "Italian Jewels" project was created in order to enhance the tourist offers of small and medium-sized towns in a uniform manner and to promote the characteristics and cultural traditions of the land following an ideal route through Italy.

The initiative was provided for by the Framework agreement signed on September 23rd, 2010 between the Minister for Tourism and the President of ANCI. The decree by the Minister of Regional Affairs, Tourism and Sport, which regulates the contract notice, was signed on May 10th, 2012 and the first call for participation by municipalities was published on the Government’s website on September 14, 2012, with expiry in November.

The aim of this project is to promote Italian "good life", contributing to the increase of seasonal adjustment policies by enhancing the environmental, cultural, tourist, historical and urban, architectural and gastronomic aspects of the Italian system of local governments, with a view to the recovery and the re-launch of the Italian image.

In particular, the initiative aims to promote Italian lifestyle among foreign or Italian tourists eager to explore even the lesser-known aspects that our country has to offer.

The following procedures are recognized and promoted by the project:

  • To preserve and make accessible its architectural or natural heritage for tourists;
  • To maintain levels of hospitality and tourist accommodation;
  • To maintain area attractions;
  • To implement policies for promoting a cultural offer;
  • To implement initiatives for accessibility and tourist information.

The municipalities which gained awards on February 12th, 2013 make up the nucleus of the "Italian Jewels” circuit and may use this title and brand for the years 2012-2017.
