Marzamemi

Overview

The name of this much-loved fishing village on the Ionian coast between the Vendicari Wildlife Oasis Controlled Nature Reserve and Portopalo di Capo Passero is of Arabic origin (meaning 'Port of the Turtles'). The arid appearance of the random buildings around the square of an old tuna fishery - also linked to the period of Arab domination - is typical of the extreme environments, a characteristic for which it was chosen in 1993 as the set for the outdoor scenes of the film Sud by Gabriele Salvatores.

In summer, the picture changes: with the arrival of holidaymakers, the square becomes a night-time meeting place, with the peak influx during the Frontier Film Festival in late July.
