The “Passion” of Sordevolo

For about two centuries, the community of Sordevolo has been autonomously staging the Passion of Jesus Christ, taking care of every organizational and artistic detail. It is a choral play, performed by young and older amateur actors, about the last hours of Christ’s life. The tradition of the show is handed down through the generations – all the children carry out, every year, a version of the story – and it can be defined as a unique and innovative form of theatre. The performance takes place in a vast open space, with a reconstruction of the city of Jerusalem as it looked in the year 33 A.D.: Herod’s Palace, the Synedrium, Pilate’s Prætorium, the Garden of the Olives, the Cenacle, the Mount Calvary. The show consists of a prologue and twenty five scenes, with the overall participation of four hundred actors and walk-on characters.
