Mamuthones & Issohadores
There are various theories regarding the origins of the Mamuthones. Some endorse the view that these fascinating figures and the traditional propitiatory rituals to protect and keep evil away date back to the nuraghi era.
Alongside the Mamuthones, clad in sheepskin and with cowbells on their backs, there are the Issohadores, figures dressed in a red bodice and wearing a white mask whose job is to follow the Mamuthones and to seize girls with the “lasso”, as omen of fertility and good health. The moment of the dressing up of the Mamuthones is one of the most important of the whole carnival period.
