The Holy Bishop Martino, his enemy Satan; the Roman Consul, the Tribunes of the plebs, the Roman Guards and their Commander and finally the Lys Nymph together with her two Maids are the leading characters marking the hundredth edition of the historical carnival of Pont-Saint-Martin. A key feature of the carnival is the chariot race: every district or “Insula” parades its own chariot and team consisting of a charioteer and athletic girls and boys whose job it is to pull the chariot. The highlight of Tuesday is the parade with floats from Pont-Saint-Martin as well as from other nearby villages and towns of Piemonte and Valle d’Aosta. The day comes to a close under the arches of the old Roman bridge with the burning of Satan the Devil and a firework display.
