Being inaugurated in Martina Franca’s (Province of TarantoDucal Palace on July 13th is the Itria Valley Festival, with a programme set to mark the concurrence of several important musical anniversaries – of Verdi, Wagner, Britten and Gesualdo da Venosa.
The spotlight shines most brightly on Giuseppe Verdi and Joan of Arc, a work he completed during his youth.
If Joan of Arc was known for its bel canto influences, Verdi’s comedic opera The Cobbler and the Fairy is certainly a worthy representative of the historically-significant and rare technique.
Another comedic jewel on the calendar is the Neapolitan-Apulian L’ambizione delusa by Leonardo Leo, a production by the Accademia del Belcanto, whose version will be the first modern performance of the opera.

And in memory of Wagner, a prestigious "Wagner Evening" is to feature the first act of the German composer’s Ride of the Valkyries. Then, Francesco d’Avalos’s "Maria di Venosa” and more traditional fare will fill the scene: Concerto per lo Spirito, Ciclo “Novecento e oltre,” “Fuori orario” (with itineraries focusing on Gesualdo and Britten) and “Festival Junior,” with Le Falene, a piece written just for children and commissioned to young composer Daniela Terranova.
