Celebrating the Riace Bronzes

01.05.2014 - 31.07.2014

Fourteen artists exhibit at Reggio Calabria's National Archaeological Museum

The Riace Bronzes

The Riace Bronzes

From May 1 to July 31, 2014, the Riace Bronzes are the focal point of the exhibit The Riace Bronzes. Nostos. The Return at Reggio Calabria’s National Archaeological Museum.
Fourteen writers, architects and designers from different corners of the world to pay homage to these remarkable ancient Greek sculptures, by way of their own personal interpretations.
Nostos is an adept definition of the epic moment in which the statues make their second homecoming – their first followed their discovery and salvage in Ionian waters, off the coast of Riace, on August 16, 1972 – to the Museo Archeologico, last December, after important restoration works.

Now, the temporary exhibition offers visitors a second reading of the two 5th-Century bronze warriors and of their role as emblem of the city of Reggio Calabria. A visit to the exhibition makes for an excellent occasion to see the rest the city, including its Art Nouveau villas and Magna Graecian ruins. Don’t pass up the opportunity to see the Library or Biblioteca della Calabria preserving the first Torah printed in Venice’s Giudecca (1475), or the local churches, some of which host paintings by Antonella da Messina.
