To talk about the Carnival in Italy is to talk about Venice, one of the most famous carnivals in the country. From 31st January, the lagoon city officially kicks off the 2015 Venice Carnival with a calendar of masked events running until February 17th which attracts tourists from all over the world.

Aided by its elegant and grandiloquent architecture and the unforgettable views of streets, squares and canals, the carnival in the Laguna is one of the unmissable events for those visiting Italy between January and February. The Grand Canal and the Cannaregio district host the big party that, as usual, opens celebrations (31st January) with a big water show starting at 18:30. The following days continue with shows, parades, theatrical touring performances and competitions rewarding the most beautiful masks which take place in the most characteristic spots of the city. Do not miss the grand finale in St. Marco's Square on Mardi Gras, where the finalists will compete in rounds for the most original, coloured, precious and creative costumes.

This year's theme is food, as a homage to Expo 2015; an opportunity to also discover the delicious food and wine of the Venetian city and of the regional traditions.
Finally, those wishing to relive the glories of the Serenissima Republic must not forget to take part in one of the several costume balls in a charming seventeenth-century building overlooking the Grand Canal. Among them, to be remembered, the Gran Ballo in Maschera of Valentine’s day on February 14th.

And since the Carnival of Venice is a special way to get to know and appreciate the lagoon city, throughout the entire event it will be possible to participate in a series of cultural initiatives relating to the carnival theme which involve the Civic Museums, the State Museum complex as well as the private foundations.
