The birth of modern sculpture

Canova. Thorvaldsen

Canova. Thorvaldsen

The history of modern sculpture experiences a decisive transformation, between the Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries, thanks to the genius of the Italian Antonio Canova and the Danish Bertel Thorvaldsen, protagonists and rivals on the scene of a cosmopolitan Rome where they were able to match themselves up with the universal values of classicism and the ancient. The showing exhibits all of the most beautiful statues by the two artists, an actual marble Olympus emblem of a civilization which looked to the ancient, but which aspired to modernity at the same time.
