The Basilica of San Nicola in Bari

The basilica of San Nicola stands in the court of the Catapano, the Byzantine dignitary who resided in Bari. The arrival of the remains of San Nicola led the Norman princes to build a large church, the first in western Romanesque style to be built in Byzantine Puglia. The facade, in limestone, has double and single lancet windows and three portals, the central one framed by a prothyrum. Two low towers, one of which was probably part of the noble Byzantine palace, extend the imposing frontage.
