Catania

In the centre of Piazza Duomo stands the famous elephant fountain, an eighteenth-century work by the architect Vaccarini who, in creating his project, used an elephant in lava stone from the Roman era and an Egyptian obelisk. The elephant, the symbol of the city, is popularly known as 'Liotru'. The Duomo and the Town Hall overlook the square.
