The splendid Duomo of Messina overlooks the square by the same name, the centre of the city, and the sixteenth century Fontana di Orione. Built by Roger II of Sicily in the early twelfth century, the church has preserved its original aspect only in the lower part. Like the rest of Messina, the Duomo was destroyed for the first time by the earthquake of 1783 and later by the bombing in 1943.
