The Fortezza Vecchia in Livorno

Here before us is the red bulk of the Fortezza Vecchia, built by Antonio da Sangallo, in the early sixteenth century. Beyond the walls stands the donjon of the Countess Matilde, a cylindrical tower built in the ninth century to guard the coast. The pentagonal fortress is built in brick and surrounded almost completely by the Medici canals that pass through Livorno and are navigable.
