The Basilica and the cult of Saint Anthony

We are standing before the magnificent Basilica di Sant'Antonio, one of the most famous churches in Christianity. The church was erected between 1232 and the mid-fourteenth century to house the tomb of the saint, born in Lisbon in 1195 and deceased in Padua in 1231. Nowadays it is a destination for thousands of pilgrims. In the centre of the square stands one of Donatello's masterpieces, the monument to Erasmo da Narni, known as Gattamelata, a captain of the Venetian Republic.
