Ravenna: Ecstasy and Mosaics

Ravenna was once a superb Capital of the Western Roman Empire, and it still shows today. Unique in the world, the city holds onto invaluable architectonic jewels that document the passage from Classical-influenced Paleochristian art to that Byzantine (such as the Complex of San Vitale, the Mausoleums of Galla Placidia and Theoderic, Sant'Apollinare, and the Baptistery of Neon, richly decorated in shining mosaics). Ravenna's mosaics are so powerful and intense that Carl Gustav Jung - one of the founders of modern psychology - recounted actually being disoriented and hallucinating when seeing the interior of the Baptistery of Neon.
