Towards the end of the 16th Century, Rome was practically embracing the young Caravaggio with open arms: indeed, he was "adopted" by the Papal aristocracy as a sort of public relations agent that could augment the credibility of the Church's Counter-Reformation message. The artist's extraordinary visual capacity was expressed in the faces and gestures of his sacred art commissions - the faces and gestures of the people he met in the backstreets and shantytowns of Rome.
