Piazza del Popolo Ascoli Piceno

This site was renovated in the sixteenth century, after having suffered for a period of abandonment and unauthorized building and its restoration followed these principles: elegance, harmony and proportions.
When a tourist gets to People's Square today, he will still be impressed by the elegance, the harmony and the proportions of this site.
The impressive architectures, the design of the porticoes, the beauty of the paving as well as the perspective of the ensemble are the main attraction of this square, that is one among the most impressive site in Ascoli Piceno.
The paving of the square is made of tiles in travertine and is surrounded by elegant Renaissance-style buildings with lively porticoes and decorations. The Capitani Palace majestically stands on the square: this is a magnificent building and its name is derived from the fact that it used to be the headquarter of a powerful medieval order, the so called Captains (Capitani in Italian).
A series of unfortunate events compromised and changed the Capitani Palace original design: a fire broke out in the 15th century and caused the destruction of both city archives and the facade (that were both subsequently rebuilt) and later, Pope Paul III' s statue was added and an impressive portico was built.
The construction of Saint Francis' church took almost two-hundreds years, and this place was built to commemorate the figure of Saint Francis, who spent several years in Ascoli Piceno.
The Romanesque facade in travertine has three finely decorated portals and the statue of Pope Julius II is positioned on the top of the largest one.
The Church has three aisles with octagonal pillars, the presbytery is majestic and the interior is rich of precious work of art and paintings.
The wooden Crucified Christ is one among the most famous work of art in this church, it is located in the left aisle and, according to the pilgrims' beliefs, it used to bleed in the past, that's the reason why it is worshiped by hundreds of pilgrims every years.
People's Square is the vibrant heart of the town, it is the citizen’s and visitor's meeting point and the location where cultural events and activities are performed: one among this events is the Quintana that is an important historical reenactment with a joust and a parade with flag throwing, ladies in costume, archers and musicians.
