Rimini - Ponte di Tiberio

Try to mix the most equipped holiday seaside resorts with a group of towns and villages rich in historical and artistic heritages, add a delightful plain not far from the sea, enliven all with high level craftsmanship, cooking and gastronomic products, and you will be in the province of Rimini.
Located in northern Italy, it spreads to the south-east side of the Emilia Romagna. It is a land mostly composed of plains, except for the Apennines which are in the western and south-western side. Personalities as Leon Battista Alberti, Brunelleschi, Piero della Francesca left signs of their talent, changing the city of Rimini into a lively and animated centre, especailly from a cultural point of view. The city is rich in history and monuments, and should not be regarded as a mere seaside resort, as is usually remembered. Discovering it through the poetical eyes of Federico Fellini will us aid to perceive a new reality.

What to see

Rimini is without any doubts the most important seaside resort of the coast of Romagna, with kilometres of very fine sand beaches warmed by the sun. It can be rightfully described as the capital of night-life.
This, however, is only one of the aspects of a city which bears a flourishing Roman, medieval and renaissance past, tied to the lordship of the House of Malatesta. The Malatestian Temple is indeed one of the treasures of the early Renaissance, with a façade designed by Leon Battista Alberti and housed artworks by Giotto, Agostino di Duccio, Piero della Francesca and Vasari. The Arch of August, dating back to the year 27 BC, is the most ancient Roman arch still standing today, while the Amphitheatre and the Bridge of Tiberius, with five arches, are still in use. The Church of S. Agostino dates back to the 13th century, although with later restorations, and shows a beautiful bell tower and splendid frescoes of the 14th century. Not far away from here lays the Sismondo Castle, an ancient fortress and stately residence which houses the Museum for Extra-European Cultures.
The different itineraries in this area may lead on a visit to the Art Gallery, with works dealing with Rimini’s history from the 14th to the 19th century; to a concert at the Malatestian Musical Festival; on a walk among the windows of Corso d’Augusto; or for a wander in the green along the Ausa and the Marecchia, and a healthy rest at the thermal centre of Galvanica.
Moving in the hinterland, on the plains of the Valconca and Valmarecchia one may set on an itinerary of castles recalling the history of the relationship between the two most important lordships, Malatesta and Montefeltro.
In these Appenine plains of Rimini reigns a real herbal culture giving that particular flavours to all typical dishes, from the rich salads to the many tasty sauces.
Along the valley of the Marecchia and the valley of Conca it is possible to take a walk out of the Italian territory. San Marino is the most ancient and small Republic of the world, also known for its particular fortress and the crenellated walls.
Moving along the coast, one can meet equipped seaside resorts such as Cattolica, with the Malatestian Fortress, and Riccione, whose Dolphinarium and thermal centre, among all the other things to do and to see, are worth being visited.

What to do

No land has ever been as attentive to tourism as the province of Rimini; the hospitality typical of this area is a pride to be exported all over the world.
In a land mainly facing the sea, the water sports are a prerogative for the lovers of canoeing, sailing and scuba diving.
Full of parks, gardens and tree-lined roads, Riccione offers more than one way to regain one's forces and even enjoy the thermal centres, surrounded by the greenery. Viale Ceccarini, the elegant salon of the city, is the perfect destination for those who love shopping, offering the best in the latest fashion. A lot of fun in the aquatic parks, cultural events and shows make a holiday in Riccione an unforgettable experience at any age.
Tradition, culture, festivals and shows are integral part of the hinterland of Rimini, with an agenda which covers the whole year. Events and shows are so numerous that it is impossible to list them all. In Cattolica, the Flowers Festival is a trade fair of flowers and plants held along the centre streets. Also, Cattolica hosts the Mystfest, an international celebration of detective and mystery novels. In Rimini, the Malatestian wedding feast recalls the wedding between Roberto Malatesta and Elisabetta Montefeltro, with a parade in period costumes, carousels, duels, shows and dances.

What to taste

The hinterland of Rimini offers a border cuisine, between Romagna and Marche, between sea and mountains, between tradition and innovation.
The richness and variety of the natural resources, such as fish, vegetables and soft fruits, are skilfully used in order to maintain the heritage of a renowned and exported gastronomical tradition.
The choice of first courses is very rich, as for example the passatelli with broth, stuffed cappelletti, mainly hand made, as tradition has it.
The second courses are mainly the brodetto, for what concerns fish dishes, and excellent mixed meat grills, to be enjoyed with side dishes mainly out of cooked vegetables.
All should be tasted with the unfailing piadina of Romagna, an unleavened flat bread which can be stuffed with salami or cheeses.
Among the wines, it is important to remember the Red Colli di Rimini DOC, Rebola DOC Colli di Rimini and the Cabernet Sauvignon Colli di Rimini DOC.
