The city lies on a hill between the valley of the Pescara river and the stream Alento, located about fifteen kilometres from the Adriatic coast.
Thanks to its location, it offers a splendid view from the peaks of Majella and Gran Sasso to the turquoise horizon of the sea.
The city centre houses a heritage of outstanding value, including the famous Cathedral of St. Justin, dating back to the early Middle Ages, with its imposing facade and the bell tower with its beautiful windows.
Inside the church are a fine marble altar of the eighteenth century, interesting paintings and wood carvings.
History and art lovers can visit the National Archaeological Museum where numerous objects dating back to the prehistoric and Roman times are exhibited.
Considerable ruins of Roman works can be admired in the old city: ruins of the ancient forum, the theatre, three temples and the baths.
