We are standing before the symbol of the city: an original monument built in 1272 to celebrate the founding of L'Aquila. Ninety-nine jets of water spout from ninety-nine masks, each different, and represent the number of founding castles of the city. Tradition says that the source of the waters was kept a secret in case the corresponding castle were to comandeer it. The beautiful fountain is located near the ancient Porta Rivera and the church of San Vito.
