The Porta dei Borsari stands at the end of the avenue by the same name, which was the main street or decumano of the Roman city. It was built in the mid-first century and its name derives from the medieval bursars, who collected tithes for the bishop. Two arches surmounted by tympanums and a double order of windows are all that remain of this ancient, monumental gate.
