Aosta / Aoste: the Roman city

Founded in the era of Augustus with the name of 'Augusta Praetoria' along the River Dora, where the valley widens, Aosta is the capital of the smallest Italian region, declared Autonomous Region with Special Statute in 1948. Aosta preserves important traces of the Roman era, including the Praetorian Gates dating from the first century and, nearby, the Arch of Augustus, built in the year 25 BC in honour of the founding of the city.
